PSYC-2656EL Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Metencephalon, Fourth Ventricle, Brainstem
Document Summary
Nerves and ganglia located outside of the skull and spine. Serves to bring information into the cns and carry signals out of the cns. Afferent nerves (sensory): from pns to brain. Efferent nerves (motor) : from brain to pns. Sympathetic (activated at state of arousal) and parasympathetic nerves (activated at a state of relaxation) Not fully developed until late teens/early twenties. Control fine motor movement important for working memory (episodic memory) , but not reference memory (procedural memory) Broca area located: part of a production of language. Contralateral organization: information left and right side crosses over. Language processing (wernicke"s area): comprehension of language. Two hemispheres separated by the longitudinal fissure. Hand and eye movement interpretation of visual images. Sulci: groove or furrow on the surface of the brain. Gyri: ridge or fold on the surface of the brain. Telencephalon (neocortex, basal ganglia, amygdala, hippocampus, lateral ventricles) Diencephalon (thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus, third ventricle, pituitary gland) longitudinal fissures.
