For children bg checks are recommended at least 4x/day (before each meal and at bedime) Control improves w/ more injecions per day and is opimized using muliple daily injecions (mdi) or an insulin pump. Mdi: involves giving a base dose of long-acing insulin plus injecions of rapid-acing insulin w/ each meal or snack (4-6 injecions/day) Schools must accommodate the special needs of children, including students w/ diabetes (according to the canadian charter of rights and freedoms) Should be individualized and appropriate to the students age and stage of development ( only as special as necessary ) Regularly scheduled meals and snacks (and adequate ime to consume them) Adjusing either food intake or insulin doses for increased physical acivity (i. e. , extra snack/bg check prior to physical acivity) Clean areas for bg checks where hands can be cleaned, w/ a sharps container to safely discard items used.
