Disability is the umbrella term for impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions, referring to the negative aspects of the interaction between an individual (with a health condition) and that individuals contextual factors (environmental and personal factors) Disability is not an attribute of the person. Disability results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers that hinder participation in society. Environment has a big impact on the experience and extent of disability. Inaccessible environments create disability by creating barriers to participation and inclusion: ex. A deaf person without a sign language interpreter: ex. A wheelchair user in a building with no elevators/accessible bathrooms.
