PSYC 242 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Physical Abuse, False Memory Syndrome
Document Summary
Summary: the accuracy of children"s reporting is highly dependent on how they are asked to report. When children are asked to recall memories using the free-narrative method, the children"s recall is as accurate as adults". A number of procedures and protocols to increase children"s accurate responding have been investigated, including statement validity analysis, the step-wise interview, and narrative elaboration. Leading questions and the use of anatomically correct dolls are problematic for accurate reporting: children report few person descriptors when asked to describe a stranger or culprit. Interior facial items such as freckles and nose shape are more likely to be reported by older children than younger children. The exterior feature of hair is frequently mentioned by both children and adults. Height, weight, and age are unlikely to be reported accurately by children and youth: children produce comparable correct identification rates with adults" when presented with a target-present lineup.
