COMM 222 Chapter 4: Module 4 222
Document Summary
Values: a broad tendency to prefer certain states of affairs over others. Have to do with what we consider good and bad. Values are motivational, signal the attractive aspects of our environment that we seek and unattractive aspects that we try to avoid or change. Signal how we should and should no behave. Not everyone holds the same values, usually socially reinforced by parents, teachers, and representatives of religions. Generations are demarcated by being of different ages, and also distinguished by having grown up under different socialization experiences. Traditionalists: respectful of authority, high work ethic. Gen y: confident, social, demanding of feedback, somewhat unfocused. Gen x & y are more accepting of diversity, strive for good work-life balance, and their comfort with technology is notable. Must know these differences of work ethic when exposed to another culture. Would still work even if they won a large sum from the lottery.
