Paul topinard first used the term criminology ; studied the body types of criminals. Raffaele garofalo credited to have coined the term criminology ; italian academic lawyer. Cesare lombroso concerned w/ attempts to identify physical & other characteristics that set criminals apart. Measurement of physical characteristics (e. g. head shape; shape & size of jaw and cheekbones) Also did work which focused upon the environmental conditions that produced criminality. Attempts to identify & measure characteristics that distinguish criminals from others have largely disappeared. Criminology"s organizing focus crime is potentially a highly contestable & problematic term. Raid in 1987 police seized a videotape which showed a # of identifiable men engaging in heavy sado-masochistic (sm) activities including beatings, genital abrasions & lacerations.
