Chapter 6 Individual factor : Moral Philosophy
1. moral philosophy
▪ specific principle or value use to decide whats right and wrong
▪ guideline to determine how to settle conflict and optimize mutual
benefit of people
▪ economic value orientation
o value can be quantify by monetary means
o if act produce value, it is ethical
▪ idealism
o place special value on idea as product of mind
o there is positive relation between idealist thinking vs
ethical decision making
▪ realism
o view external world exist independent of our perceptions
o negative relation with ethical decision making
o there is self interest
2. institutional and intrinsic goodness
▪ monist
o believe only 1 thing is intrinsically good
o hedonism – pleasure is ultimate good
1. qualitative : more pleasure is better
2. quantitative: possible to get too much pleasure
▪ pluralist
o not one thing is intrinsically good
o non-hedonist
▪ instrumentalist: reject end can be separated from means and end/
purpose/ outcome are intrinsically good
▪ goodness theory: focus on end result or happiness created
▪ obligation theory: focus on mean and motive of action
3. type of philosophy
▪ consequentialist / teology
o egoism: right or acceptable behavior in term of
consequences
o enlightened egoism
1. self interest + well being of others
2. abide by law
3. whistle blower
4. eg. help turtle cross highway because if kill, one feel
distressed
o utilitarianism : greatest good for greatest number of
people
o rule utilitarianism: focus on general principle and rule to
determine behavior is ethical
o act utilitarianism: focus on specific action
