What is culture: culture- a complex collection of values, beliefs, behaviours, and material objects shared by a group and passes on from one generation to the next. Defining features of culture: five defining features: pg. 122: culture is learned, culture is shared, culture is transmitted, culture is cumulative, culture is human, culture influences every area of our lives, culture can be divided into two major segments: Material culture (the tangible artifacts and physical objects found in a given culture) Values, norms, folkways, mores, laws, and sanctions: values form the foundation of what is considered acceptable, values- beliefs about ideal goals and behaviours that serve as standards for social life. General guidelines on what society deems important: norms- culturally defined rules that outline appropriate behaviours. Help people to know how to act in given social situations: folkways- informal norms that suggest customary ways of behaving. Mores- norms thats carry a strong sense of social importance and necessity.
