Dissociative disorders: dissociative amnesia, depersonalization-derealization disorder, dissociative identity disorder. Depersonalization-derealization disorder: persistent or recurrent experiences of one or both: Experiences of unreality, detachment, or being an outside observer with respect to one"s thoughts, feelings, sensations, body or actions. Experiences of unreality or detachment with respect to surroundings: reality testing remains intact. C & d. clinically significant impairment and distress; not due to a drug or medical condition. In children, not better explained by imaginary playmates or other fantasy play. Possession-form identities: spirit, supernatural being, or outside person has taken control, distinguish from cultural-accepted possession states in being involuntary, distressing, uncontrollable, recurrent and persistent, occurs at times and in places that are not culturally accepted. Differential diagnosis: ptsd: amnesia for everyday, non-traumatic events; disruptive intrusions by identity states into sense of self and agency, psychotic disorder (e. g. , schizophrenia): different than hallucinations because symptoms perceived as caused by alternate identity.
