Module 10: brain and behaviour (the subcortex and endocrine system) Cerebral cortex (unnecessary for physical survival) makes us uniquely human abut it is important to realize the criic role of our primiive subcortex and its link to the endocrine system. Even if you lost part of your cerebral cortex you"d sill survive. Hunger, thirst, sleep, atenion etc. are controlled by the parts of the subcortex. Damage to the lower brain can result in coma or even death. Behaviour is solely a product of the nervous system. Hormone afect everything from personality and emoions to hunger and reacions to stress. The subcortex (at the core of the brain mater) Can be divided into brainstem, midbrain, and forebrain (also includes cerebral cortex) Midbrain viewed as a link between forebrain and brainstem. Cerebral cortex (voluntary movements; sensaions, learning, remembering, thinking, emoion, consciousness) Hypothalamus (controls hunger, thirst, temperature, and other viscera and bodily funcions)
