PSYC 1F90 Chapter Notes -Concept Learning, Intelligence Quotient, Twin Study
Document Summary
Concepts: ideas that represent categories of objects or events. Use mental images to: make a decision/ solve a problem/ change feelings/ improve skill/ prepare for some action/ aid memory. We can mentally picture objects in a 3d state. Seeing something in your mind is similar to seeing it in front of your face. When forming an image brain areas that store memories send signals to visual cortex where image is created. Use stored images to apply past experiences to problem solving. People with good imaging abilities score higher on tests of creativity. Smaller images makes it harder for possibility to see finer details. Muscular responses do relate to thinking, we think with our bodies and our heads. While thinking and talking kinesthetic sensations can guide the flow of ideas. People with good kinesthetic imagery learn bodily skills faster than those with poor imagery. Concept formation: process of classifying information into meaningful categories. Based on experience with positive and negative instances.
