PSYC 1F90 Chapter Notes - Chapter Week 9: Green Leaves, Nocturnal Enuresis
Document Summary
Aboriginal children were separated from their parents and raised in overcrowded, underfunded and often unhealthy residential schools. This prevented their elders from passing along their knowledge and practices. They were denied the right to speak their language and told their cultural beliefs were sinful. They were victims of scandalously high death rates, part of them resulting from being left so sexual predators. Canada did this with the purpose to destroy their culture. They succeeded in a way as when those children / students emerged their lives were cut short due to drugs, alcohol and violence. While the children were being placed in schools, Parents would bring their children to collection sites, where they would be picked up by a truck. Many would pile into the back, ages ranging from 5 - 16. When they arrived they were stripped of their native clothes, their long hair cut / shaved and they were scrubbed / roughly bathed.
