Document Summary

Shakespeare opens the play with a tragedy showing egeon being told that he is to be killed for coming into the dukes city. The tragedies continue when egeon tells the story of what had happened to him and his family and this opens a path for more tragedy because even though he has a valid excuse for being in. Ephesus the duke does not pardon him insisting that he cannot change the rules. The first scene ends with egeon saying hopeless and helpless doth egeon went, but to procrastinate his lifeless end (1. 1. 57-58). Shakespeare really opens up the play in a confusing manner that leads the audience to believe that tragedy is around every corner because of the dark tone in which the play started in. It is interesting how the opening problem with egeon is not addressed until act 5 scene 1 when egeon is back on stage.
