Document Summary

Chapter 1 an introduction to the human body. Anatomy and physiology defined: anatomy: the science of body structures and the relationships among them, physiology: the science of body functions. Levels of structural organization and body systems: chemical, very basic level. Homeostasis: the condition of equilibrium (balance) in the body"s internal environment due to the constant interaction of the body"s many regulatory processes. Homeostasis and body fluids: the proper functioning of body cells depends on precise regulation of the composition of the interstitial fluid surrounding them. Negative feedback systems: reverses a change in a controlled condition, ex. blood pressure regulation. If the action of a positive feedback system is not stopped by an outside event, it can run away and may even produce life-threatening conditions in the body. Body positions: anatomical position is the standard position of reference, prone position: body lying face down, supine position: body is lying face up.
