Memory
Memory-
Memory is the mental Representation of something to be remembered.
Encoding is the processing of incoming information to create memory traces to be stored.
Storage is the process of maintaining information in memory.
Retrieval is the process of recovering stored information from memory.
Processing and Encoding
Shallow Processing is Structural Encoding (e.g. physical structure of a word)
Intermediate Processing is Pneumonic Encoding (e.g. sound)
Deep Processing is Semantic Encoding (e.g. meaning)
Sensory Memory
The Mechanism that performs initial encoding of sensory stimuli.
Sensory Memory Trace:
Brief preservation of sensation following stimuli
Echoic Memory = hearing
Iconic Memory = vision
Short- Term Memory
Memory storage system that temporarily holds current or recently attended information.
Information for immediate use
We can actively aid memory function at levels of encoding and retrieval
STM has a duration up to 20 seconds without rehearsal
Capacity of Short Term Memory
Increase STM capacity by chunking. Chunking is grouping information into manageable units that can
be easily encoded, stored and retrieved,
Working Memory
Central Executive shifts attention as needed and is the command/control centre
The Phonological loop is for maintenance rehearsal of verbal information.
The Episodic Buffer integrates components if working memory and interfaces with LTM.
The Visuospatial Sketchpad holds and manipulates images
