Legislative-
Legislation (or "statutory law") is law which has been promulgated (or "enacted") by a
legislature or other governing body or the process of making it.
A legal remedy, also judicial relief or a judicial remedy, is the means with which a court of
law, usually in the exercise of civil law jurisdiction, enforces a right, imposes a penalty, or
makes another court order to impose its will.
1788- England settlers bring their legal system with them to Australia. The English law
included equity and statue law, and was transported in 1788. (J and L)
1810- First civilian judge Alice Ben (J)
1816-1837- Sir Francis Forbes first Chief Justice in new NSW Supreme Court, he played a big
role i the creatio of the ‘ule of law”. J
1817- Infernal statue was passed
1823- NSW Acts 1823 (Imp) created Supreme Court in New South Wales (J)
-Criminal trials be tried by jury, under 1823 Act. (L)
-Increased size of Legislative council from to between 10-15, also under 1823 Act.
1825- Growth of the Constitution, with the help of Governor Darling.
1828- Imperial Parliament passed the Australian Courts Act 1828 9 Geo, c83. Supreme
courts were given authority wither some laws were suitable to the states conditions. All
English common law enforced on 25/07/1828 in so far as applicable. (J and L)
1829- WA first obtained English law. (J and L)
1836- SA first obtained English law. (J and L)
1842- Legislative council was expanded under Australian Constitution Act number 1 (L)
1850- Australian constitution number 2
1855- NSW Legislative Council put forward bill for a bicameral legislative. (L) Under, NSW
Constitution statue
1865- Colonel laws validity act passed. Statue could not purely copy English law. (L)
1986- Appeals to Privy Council abolished, under the Australian Act 1986 (L)
1987- Australian case last heard to the Privy Council (J)
