PHTY100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Lumbricals Of The Hand, Long Plantar Ligament, Weight-Bearing
Document Summary
Functional anatomy of the foot: arches of the foot: Arches of foot located between weight bearing locations of the foot. Arches act as a functional unit to distribute the weight of the foot. Arches are present when we are about 5 years old and develop until 10years old. Absorb shock during impact with ground and distribute this across the whole length of the foot, over an extended surface area, preventing force at a single point. Wedge shape (wider at the top) of bones maintain shape of arch statically (when standing) Plantar aponeurosis: anchor at bony ends of both arches, preventing them from splaying out. Spring ligament (main supporter of the medial longitudinal arches of the foot) Bowstrings (archery bow, with the stick holding the beam)/tie beams: Medial part of flexor hallucis longus works well here. Tibialis posterior slings under, holding the top of the arch up; aided by tibialis anterior. (help with dynamic stability).
