Introduction

Immigration is the international movement of people to a destination country of which they are not natives or where they do not possess citizenship in order to settle as permanent residence or naturalized citizens. Commuters, tourist and other short-term stays in a destination country do not fall under the definition of immigration or migration; seasonal labor immigration is sometimes included, however. The talents of immigrants, the capabilities of the existing workforce, and the features of the financial system all play a role in the effects of immigration on the labor force. These are also likely to be different in the long and short run, depending on how well the economy and labor demand react to increased labor supply.
