First, the redox reaction must be divided into oxidation half cell and reduction half cell reaction.

To balance excess oxygen same number of water is added on the same side. A double number of must be added to the opposite side. To balance excess hydrogen, an equal number of hydroxide ions are added and an equal number of water molecules are added on the opposite side. To balance the charge suitable number of electrons must be added to the proper side. The two half-cell reaction is multiplied with a proper number to make electron gain and loss equal.
