Melody: a succession of individual pitched that we hear as a recognizable whole. Range: the distance between the highest and lowest noted. Contour: shape of the melody line, the way it moves up or down. Mostly pitches moving by step or small leaps. Phrase: a unit within a larger structure, in this case, the melody. Cadence: the resting place of a phrase, like a period or comma. Rhythm: the movement of music, gives each note a length. Beat: the unit that makes up rhythm; pulse. In notation, the meter is marked off into measures (bars) and bar lines. Duple meter: alternates a strong downbeat with a weak beat. Triple meter: a strong downbeat then 2 weak beats. Quadruple meter: 4 beats, primary accent on first beat and secondary accent on third beat. Simple meter: the beat is divided into two. Compound meter: the beat is divided into three. Harmony: how notes (pitches) sound together, or when played simultaneously.
