Shifting feelings related to something to another less-threatening person, object or situation. Unacceptable feelings or behaviors are controlled by demonstrating the opposite of what the patient is feeling. For example: smokers talking about the dangers of nicotine. Doing something to make-up for an action that was previously done. Creating reasonable and acceptable explanations for behaviors that are not acceptable. A person does not feel connected to the world around them. Pretending that what is true is not. Talking about ones strengths to make-up for the weaknesses. Conscious or unconscious assumptions of the characteristics of another person or group of people. Separating ones feelings from the situation to focus on the task at hand.
