Document Summary

Alfred tennyson, 1st baron tennyson frs, was an english poet who lived from august 6, 1809 to october 6: during queen victoria"s reign, he served as poet laureate. Medal at cambridge in 1829 for "timbuktu," one of his early works. Poems, chiefly lyrical, his first solo collection of poems, was published in 1830. "claribel" and "mariana," two of tennyson"s most famous poems, were included in this collection. Although some reviewers criticised his work as too emotional, it quickly became popular and brought tennyson to the attention of well-known writers of the day, notably samuel taylor. Tennyson"s early poetry was a key influence on the pre-raphaelite brotherhood, with its medievalism and vivid visual imagery. Tennyson was also a master of brief lyrics, as evidenced by "break, break, break", "the charge of the light. Brigade", "tears, idle tears", and "crossing the bar". Much of his verse, such as "ulysses," was based on classical mythical ideas.
