"claribel" and "mariana," two of tennyson"s most famous poems, were included in this collection. Although some reviewers criticised his work as too emotional, it quickly became popular and brought tennyson to the attention of well-known writers of the day, notably samuel taylor. Tennyson"s early poetry was a key influence on the pre-raphaelite brotherhood, with its medievalism and vivid visual imagery. Tennyson was also a master of brief lyrics, as evidenced by "break, break, break", "the charge of the light. Brigade", "tears, idle tears", and "crossing the bar". Much of his verse, such as "ulysses," was based on classical mythical ideas.
