Document Summary

Insider - outsider debate; how religion ought to be studied. Explain hermeneutic challenges against scholarly attempts to study religion. Discuss some arguments brought up in insider-outsider debates in study of religion. Indicate some of the widely discussed approaches to the study of religion. Philosophical hermeneutics emphasized human understanding and interpretation. We see things from specific lenses and have our own prejudices. Some argue that because our knowledge depends on where we stand, there is no universal value, every account is relative, and there is no truth . Not necessarily; a non-member can have their own biases. Also, a non-member may not have a proper understanding of what certain practices mean to the people of faith. The result of a scholar of religion"s work must rely on both insider and outsider perspectives. Insider - outsider boundaries are not clearly determined. The insider knows what it means and feels like from the inside.
