BIOLOGY Lecture Notes - Posterior Pituitary, Endocrine System, Ecdysone
Document Summary
Molting and development in insects are controlled by a combination of hormones: A brain hormone causes the prothoracic glands to release ecdysone. hormone. The retention of larval characteristics is promoted by juvenile. Ecdysone promotes molting (in the presence of juvenile hormone) and the development of adult characteristics (in the absence of juvenile hormone). The endocrine system is used by the hypothalamus to start reactions after it receives information from the nervous system. The hypothalamus is connected to the pituitary gland, which is made up of the both the anterior and posterior pituitaries. Hormones produced in the hypothalamus are stored and secreted by the posterior pituitary. The hypothalamus controls the anterior pituitary"s hormone production and release. Oxytocin causes uterine contractions and milk production. Sucking triggers the release of oxytocin from the hypothalamus via the nervous system, which further stimulates the milk glands. This is an illustration of positive feedback, where the stimulus prompts a stronger reaction.
