Developed the mechanism theory for how continental drift works, and called it plate tectonics. Continents are the outer layer of the earths crust that much on the semi-fluid layer. These plates often collide with each other and form mountains. As they move away from each other, its called continental rift, in which the continent is extended. The semi fluid layer of the earth is called the mantle: this layer is constantly shifting, rising and falling. Release at a time when the world was going under a economical and globalization revolution (late 16th century). Created as traders from europe were travelling to the americas: the traders wanted to develop the most efficient trade route, this is called mercantilism.
