How complex was the social and political organization of the society. Most likely societies were able to grow and become more complex after agriculture and the adoption of it. How do we understand the levels (simple to complex societies) Classifications of change (ladder) vs linear growth. Categories of organization (elman service, 1915-1996 - controversial as it is linear vs the ladder proposed) Scales up to around a few thousand members. Practice agriculture and have settled down in permanent villagers. Many individual communities tied together with kinship. Scaled between 5000 - 20,000 people living within the community. Power can be heritable in this society. Power is expressed through relation to chief. Differences in social status based on lineage. People specialize in certain areas (ie pottery, agriculture etc)
