Document Summary

Consists of bones of the skeleton and the cartilages, ligaments, and other connective tissues. Functions: support, storage of minerals & lipids, blood cell production, protection, leverage. Peds compensate well & then decompensate suddenly, respiratory failure happens 1st. Compensation mechanisms related to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, ability of arteries to elasticate and constrict are much better. Sudden decompensation happens because they do not have as many resources available to them due to the smaller body size. Adults don"t compensate well d/t comorbidities & aging, cardiac failure occurs 1st. E. g. vitamin d deficiency (vit d is linked to the quality of our skeletal structures), anemia (iron deficiencies), starvation. Radiation injury: damage to cells at the molecular level. Ionizing radiation => electron displacement, broken cellular bonds, effects cellular replication (e. g. : cancer tx radiation; nuclear radiation; radioactive agents) Ultraviolet radiation (uvr) => burn + ros formed => dna damage or necrosis.
