7 views3 pages

Document Summary

Integumentary system- consists of skin, hair, nails, & glands, its accessory structures & subcutaneous tissue. Protects body from pathogens innermost/base epidermal layer. With continuous mitosis, producing new cells to replace worn-off surface cells. Conversion of cholesterol to vitamin d when exposed to sun uv rays injury, dehydration & Melanin production is genetically regulated & increased by exposure to sun uv rays. Epidermis- outer layer & made of stratified squamous. Melanin protects living skin layers from further epithelium. 5 layers of epidermis: (come let"s get sun burn) exposure to sun uv rays. Capillaries in papillary layer nourish the stratum germinativum. Papillary layer- uneven junction of the dermis with the epidermis. Contains capillaries that nourish the dermis : stratum corneum- outermost epidermal layer stratum germinativum. Prevents entry of pathogens & chemicals: stratum lucidum- layers of dead cells & dispersed keratins, stratum granulosum- layers of dead cells with formation of keratins. Lamellar bodies release lipids: stratum spinosum- keratin fibers & lamellar bodies accumulate.
