LIBRLT110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: International Standard Book Number
Document Summary
Librlt110 introduction to libraries and the information industry. A library catalogue is an essential tool that a library can use to provide access to information. There are other tools that are used for the same purpose, which will be covered in other weeks in this course, including indexes and classification schemes. Library catalogues are designed to provide many different access points so that a user may search in many different ways. The use of automated library catalogues over the last 30-40+ years, and their development over that time, has meant that the number and types of access points to library catalogue information are increasing. A manual (card) catalogue primarily gave access only by author, title and subject, because of the huge amount of labour involved in maintaining information in that format. In today"s world it is not unusual to access library catalogues to search by author, subject, title, format, series, format, location, date of publication, call number, isbn, etc.
