LIB 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Nan Goldin, Heeb, Gingerbread Man
Document Summary
When thinking about social change or movements that changed the world, art is usually not the first thing that comes to mind. However, in the 20th century, women were using their remarkable creative talents to do just that, change the world with their art. 1960s, during the american anti-war demonstrations and queer, civil, and gender rights movements, the feminist art movement began. Similar to the modernist movements in the early. 20th century, feminists were fighting to change the art world, which up until then was dominated by the opposite sex. They used their art to challenge the existing world around them; they paved the way for the activist art genres later in the 1980s (the art story, n. d. ). This journal will go over how women"s artistic expression and movements for social change intersected in the late 20th century. It will provide two examples of creative women from that time whose art helped make social change possible.
