Instrumental conditioning: attitude is formed based on direct experience. Heuristic function: attitudes provide an efficient means of understanding objects once the attitudes are formed, can lead to prejudice. Sense of self and self worth: tend to adopt attitudes that are in tune with our identities, e. g. , if you identify with being a liberal, you might adopt more attitudes in alignment with most/ all liberal ideologies. Self protection: we adopt certain attitudes to protect our self image or self worth. Attitude structures: embedded in cognitive structure, linked with other attitudes, makes it difficult for people to change their minds.
