Document Summary

Utilitarianism: determines the ethical significance of action from the consequences of the act. Principle-based: determine ethic on basis of moral principles such as respecting human rights. Virtue: tells us to consider the moral character of individuals and how various character traits can contribute to, or obstruct a happy life. Uses the consequentialist approach: determine wrong or right by calculating consequences. We should act in ways that produce better consequences than the alternatives we"re considering. Better consequences: which promote human well-being (happiness, health, dignity, freedom) Opposes policies that aim to benefit only a small social, economic, or political minority. No act is ever completely right or wrong in every situation (lying is neither right nor wrong because there may be certain situations where lying will do better than being honest) Maximize the overall good (in relation to financial practice, aims to making a decision that gives more benefits over costs) Example: concern over regulation on workplace health and safety.
