Computer Science 4460Z Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Deep Structure And Surface Structure, Animal Language, Noam Chomsky
Document Summary
In this chapter, we"ll look at how adults think, how they problem solve, and what exactly is a language. A couple of questions for you to consider. We"ll try to answer some of these questions in this chapter: language. In the first few pages of the chapter we take a look at language. You should know the basic components (phonemes and morphemes) and how we string together concepts. An important part of this section is syntax. Syntax defines the grammar for a language and tells us how to put the words together in the proper order. Chomsky has discussed the distinction between the deep structure and the surface structure of a sentence. The real meaning of my thought (deep structure) may be expressed in several different forms (surface structure), all perfectly correct. But sometimes it is hard to tell what the deep structure is simply by looking at the surface structure. Consider the following sentence: make me a coffee.
