The endocrine system: endocrine glands & hormones ch 20b pineal gland. Butterfly-shaped w/ right & left lobes connected by a midline isthmus. Cretinism - hypo secretion during first few months of life. Identification & treatment w/ thyroxine shortly after birth helps restore physical & mental development hyperthyroidism. Surgical removal of a portion of the over-secreting thyroid. Small glands on posterior surface of thyroid gland, usually 4 per person. Parathyroid hormone (pth): raises blood calcium levels if they get too low. Opposite effects, but work together to maintain homeostasis thymus. Located just superior to the heart & just deep to the sternum. Larger in infants & children than in adults. Development of mature t cells (immune function) adrenal glands. Paired adrenal glands sit on superior borders of the kidneys. Each gland has an outer adrenal cortex & an inner adrenal medulla, with each region secreting different hormones adrenal cortex.
