If not fatal can result in intellectual disability, paralysis, retinal damage, learning disorders, seizures. Babies most vulnerable due to large head, weak neck muscles, soft plates in head. Put baby down and take a break. Infants who cant sleep have less ability to sleep when they"re older. Spend about half of their sleep time in rem. Occurs mostly in infants with abnormal brain stem functioning involving serotonin.
