Virginia longitudinal study of divorce: hetherington (1988; 1999: compared the outcome for children (group of families who were divorced, and group that was not) In general, daughters tended to do better when they were with mom teenaged sons: sons tended to do better living with dad (especially with, mom says to son to take out the trash. The teenaged: with moms and teenaged sons negative reinforcement trap: says i don"t want to do that right now i"m busy. take out the trash i"m busy etc etc. Fine, i"ll do it myself doesn"t have to do it. Intervention: multifaceted problem hard to know what to do. in all types of ways, courts are reluctant to remove children from homes. One tries to intervene: early childhood, parent training, stress management, home-visitor programs.
