Outer membrane: defines cell shape and boundary, selective barrier. Made of phospholipid bilayer (phosphate heads are hydrophilic and point towards water while hydrophobic fatty acid tails point inward) Things that are dissolved in water have a hard time crossing because middle of membrane is hydrophobic. Controls what goes in/out of cell selective barrier . Surface area matters for rate at which molecules can cross microvilli into cell. Cillia (look like microvilli but completely different job, finger/hair like structures that stick out from surface of cell, function is to move and sweep things past the cell) Paramecia swim through water w cillia and sweep bacteria into their mouths. * ependymal cells also have microvilli which add/secrete stuff from cell into cerebrospinal fluid. Flagellum: on surface of cell, help identify it moves/propels sperm. Outside of cell recap: function of membrane is to be a boundary and regulate what enters/leaves cell.
