Taphonomy: the study of how fossils form: worries about how things are preserved, what environment they were preserved in. Preservation: a fossil is not the original bone, it"s the rock preservation. Sometimes the interior details of the bones are preserved as well: pompeii, volcanic eruption covered an entire town in ash. There are perfect holes in the ash that are the exact shape of the town peoples" bodies. Just the mold of the body, outer shape. Deformation: after fossilization, the ground can shift, the ground is always shifting, fossils can get bent/tweaked underground.
