Necessity- actions are unlawful, but actions should be excused. Defendant should not be held responsible because of their state of mind. Duress ex: forced to engage in criminal behavior. Legal system says psych has no legal business in courtroom when dealing with insanity. As a legal term, looks at two components- irrationality and compulsion. Irrationality (cognitive)- establishes that person was not in control with his or her mental processes. Like ocd: andrea yates murdered 3 out of 5 children.
