Document Summary

Respiratory pigments: dual role of gills- breathing and ex: capture of prey, filter feeding, locomotion, respiratory pigments increases the oxygen carrying capacity of body fluids, respiratory pigments. May be found inside cells or dissolved in extracellular fluids. The metal in it likes to be oxidized (iron loves to be oxidized. Oxygen is attracted to metal atoms: hemocyanin (cu)- in most mollusks, some arthropods, within hemolymphs. Blue/ green: hemoglobin (fe)- only respiratory pigment in vertebrate blood cells but it is a common respiratory pigment in hemolymph of invertebrates as well. Variety of hemoglobin: hemoglobin is more efficient at oxygen delivery than hemocyanin due to cooperate binding. In each chain, there is an iron containing hem group. In one blood cell, have more than 250,000 hemoglobin in each blood cell. Each hemoglobin can hold 4 oxygen atoms. =1 million oxygen atoms per blood cell. 1 cubic millimeter= 4-5 million red blood cells.
