Other cultural influences pre-date tourism to many communities and have greater influence than tourism. The power of the media and the internet and the media have a massive impact truly unprecedented. Colonialism and the power of the media have also greatly impacted culture. Culture brokers are essentially tourism middle-men" they make those things which make a community special or unique become commodified or co-opted. What used to be viewed as something that existed for the community becomes something to be consumed by the tourist. Demand wants to escape and be pampered in privacy without taking the local community into consideration. Tourists desire to get to the back stage" until there is no more back stage (or sacred space) for the local community. Supply wants the money, but not the impacts different stakeholders within the community want different things. Explains the homogeneity of destinations (full of the same chain brands).
