Uterine contraction 15-20 minutes apart and last up to a minute each. Contractions progress to 2-5 minutes apart and intensity increases. Cervix becomes dilated to about 10 cm 4 inches. This stage may last 12-14 hours for first birth and is often significantly shorter for later births. Baby"s head starts to move through cervix and the birth canal. Contractions come almost every minute and last for about a minute. Stage ends when the baby is completely outside of mothers body. This stage usually last for 5 minutes to an hour. Placenta, umbilical cord, and other membranes are detached and expelled. Induction (pitocin): increases strength and duration of contractions. Pain relief (analgesics, anesthesia): drugs can be passed to baby, may extend labor or cause fever, increased risk of c-section. Vbac: vaginal birth after a previous c-section.
