Geology is the science that pursues an understanding of planet earth. Physical: examine earth materials and seeks to understand the many processes that operate on our planet (earthquakes, volcanoesetc) Historical: seeks an understanding of the origin of earth and its development through time (evolution, movement of continent) Problems addressed by geology include: natural hazards, resources, world pop growth, and environmental issues. Geologic time > talk about time in terms of millions/bill years > many processes are very gradual > earth is 4. 6 billion years old. Uniformitarianism > phsycial chemical and biologic laws that operate today have operated throughout the geologic past (present is the key to the past) Gravity operates today in the same manner as it did before. We can still make inferences how the geologic processes have shaped the earth using the idea of uniformitarianism. Relative dating > dates are place in proper sequence or order w/o knowing their specific age.
