Document Summary

Terms we used in discussing alice in wonderland. Two important literary terms that illuminate alice: Surrealism: in art and literature, this is the practice of creating incongruous, dream-like imagery based on unnatural combinations and juxtapositions. We see this in carroll"s writings and in tenniel"s drawings. Examples: the mock turtle and the bizarre changes (pig into baby, mock turtle) remind us of sendak sometimes. Allusion: reference to another well-known work (literature, art, or an event). When you make an allusion, you never pause to explain it. That"s why allusion needs sharing of a cultural knowledge base. (e. g. : all the allusions to isaac watts" divine songs, which carroll"s singers parody, would be recognized by his audiences. )
