Document Summary

Lecture 12 notes: genome-wide association study (gwas, map and potentially identify genes involved in the traits by examining variations in snps, can also predict, risk of developing diseases, effectiveness of drugs, adverse effects of drugs. Linkage disequilibrium: alleles (not genes) are so close they are always inherited together (no crossing over) Inherited together more often than would be predicted. Indicates the tightness of linkage between a snp and a gene of interest: likelihood that particular crossover frequency data suggests linkage rather than inheritance by chance. Snps differ in their effect on phenotype: causative snps have direct effect on protein involved in trait, coding snp, non-coding snp, uncorrelated snp: no effect on protein; not linked, correlated snps: no effect on protein; genetically linked.
