PSYC 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Psychosexual Development, Libido, Developmental Psychology
Document Summary
Life span development is the scientific study of the ways people grow, change, and stay the same through their lives from conception to death. Rigorous study: follow all leads, read about it, question it, get involved in the complexity. When you are done with a study (or dissertation), you know as much about the topic as anyone around. Look for influences and relationships between other experiences (sometimes called causes and effects). Psycho-social change: relationship to self, others, and world (subtle). Development occurs the moment conception begin, even if life is not viable- meaning could live on own. Life ends with death, but the doesn"t mean your legacy is over. Van gogh- killed himself as a failure but now famous. Ty cobb- famous then, now a racist, dirty player. Lifespan is lifelong- some original people thought development ended at adulthood. Few in organized sports play after high school. Plasticity- many skills can be modified with practice and training.
