PSYC 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: 18 Months, Pacifier, Object Permanence
Document Summary
Learning is based on complex patterns of reward and punishment. Language learned one word at a time, correct errors. Piaget: learning takes place through development of brain. All children with normal development should be able to understand same things at same stage of life. Intellectual achievement based on development of skills through five senses and motor (coordination). We look at how well children walking, talking, running, coloring, jumping, etc. Achievements: object permanence- the attempt to search for objects once they disappear from view. Representational abilities: language development, words stand for objects, symbols represent objects. Deferred imitation: around 2, will be able to see actions and repeat later. Not monkey see, monkey do, but monkey see and do about 3 hours later. Circular reactions: accidental learning that then becomes intentional and varied. Primary: action involving own body-suck thumb when no pacifier around. Secondary circular reactions: an action that gets a response from another person is repeated.
