A set of conventions that people interpret, at any given time, as the best way of representing reality. At different time people will have different ideas of what realism is. Discriminating about the things we can represent. Before the renaissance, things were represented realistically but they were represented in very bizarre ways. Early codes of realism seem unusual from today"s perspective. These conventions change with technology and formal innovation. The codes of realism change with technological innovation. Argued that cutting was not a realistic technique for representing reality. Technique where the background is as clear as the foreground. Bazin argues that this technique was conducive to realism even though our eyes do not function in that way. A movement of film realistically reflecting the difficult economic and moral conditions in post-wwii italy. Emphasis on the value of ordinary people. Preoccupation with italy"s fascist past and its aftermath of the wartime devastation.
