Nation: the term nation can be linked to shared ethnicities, isolated geographical territory, isolated political identity, etc, culture is intimately tied to a nation, a nation can maybe even be de ned as an imaginary community (benderick anderson) Imaginary community people who come to believe that they share a common identity. Body of thoughts and cultural practices embodied the elite : during the qing dynasty, these thoughts + practices = ideology (aka. Hence, this culture of confucianism and practicing it is what meant you were civilized: anyone not practicing this ideology/culture = uncivilized. Nation vs. state: nations tend to grow more organically, burning questions: Is the state a necessity to the maintenance of the nation: can you change the state in service of the nation. Is it possible of overthrowing the state, without jeopardizing the entire nation? : nations exist over and above states.
