Document Summary

Why don"t people do something: dislike complexity, dislike science, discount the future, dislike change, dislike too much info = selective info bias, tragedy of the commons. Dislike science - what is science: objective collecting of facts to test hypotheses, open to testing by other people (transparent, works great! Problem is: results can be manipulated by money and politics, tells people what they don"t want to hear, boring to non-specialists. Recent rise of anti-scientific thinking in the us. About 50% of americans don"t believe evolution occurred or there was a big bang. Many people are attracted to belief systems and turned off by facts. Tyranny of the here and now: generational debt: i enjoy the benefits of not caring about human impacts while the costs are paid by future generations, most environmental problems are passed on to future generations. !3: climate change, ocean acidification, and biodiversity loss, apathy is a win-win for people who don"t care about the future.
